Since its launch in 2010, Instagram has gone from a tiny photo sharing app to a major player in the social media sphere. Originally, it was available exclusively on iOS, but since then it has changed dramatically, especially after being acquired by Facebook in 2012. Facebook has gradually been updating Instagram so you can now even have a business account on the network, complete with analytics. You can even advertise your Facebook posts on Instagram too. And then there is the more recent addition of Instagram Stories.

But does your business actually need to have an Instagram account? To help you decide, here are 5 points you should consider:

1. Besides Facebook, internet users spend the most time on Instagram

Research in 2017 found that social media and video platforms are becoming more important and that most of us use our mobiles to access content these days. Both of these mean Instagram is only growing in popularity.

2. Visual content is more engaging than text

They say a picture paints a thousand words; a video can paint more! Instagram is a very visual platform and allows you to present your product or service without needing to write too much. With the wide range of filters and editing tools, you can create beautiful imagery to advertise your brand.

3. Instagram can cross-post easily to other networks

In its early days, many people used Instagram only for its editing and sharing facilities. However, it’s very simple to link your Instagram account to your Twitter feed, Facebook page and Tumblr account – so can help to populate those channels with eye-catching content too.

4. Instagram has relatively high conversion rates

According to this Shopify infographic, Instagram visitors go on to make a purchase when visiting a site at a rate of 1.08%. This is the 4th highest rate amongst social networking sites and means that for every 100 people who visit your site from Instagram, one will go on to make a purchase.

5. Instagram is great for mobile sharing

Unlike other social media, Instagram was designed as a mobile app and largely remains so. It is specifically designed for you to take photos on your mobile and post them. Of course, there are some very curated feeds out there and many people use very expensive cameras these days, but with Instagram Stories you can still share very candid photos and videos from inside your business.

Of course, there are some instances where Instagram is not the best idea. It is a very visual platform, and thanks to the new algorithm, you do need to post visually appealing photos in order to reach an audience. If you don’t have the patience to take and edit a good quality photo, or you work in something so secretive you can’t show the world what you do, Instagram is perhaps not for you.

For many of us though, Instagram is a great way to enhance our marketing activities. Don’t think you have to just stick to photos of your products though. Often, those accounts that never show their products are the ones that prove most successful. Persil sells washing powder, but their Instagram feed is full of photos of children having fun – and most of these are sourced from parents who give permission for their photos to be shared. Another great example is HootSuite, who is a B2B company but still do really well on Instagram. You won’t see screenshots of their platform or software on their profile. Instead, they share photos of the team or photos from their customers.
